VOL. XXXII .. Num. 5542 | In the News:Aftermath of the Attack
President Bishop declared in front of Congressional Hall today her intention to “seek out and bring to justice” those responsible for the deadly terror attack on the Presidential Mansion five days ago. In an address to a joint session of the Senate and the Congress Chamber, Bishop pledged that the deaths of 239 people killed in the attack would not go unanswered. To large applause that drew both sides of the political spectrum, she reiterated the strength and resolve of the Zamastanian people and her expression of gratitude to the first responders, military, and allies for assisting in the aftermath of the events of Wednesday. However, the aisle was clearly split among conservatives and minority parties when she reinforced support for the airstrikes on Vulkarian rebel groups.
This moment was captivating in the sense that it showed the massive split along political lines on Zamastan’s current air campaign against the M.L.F., who have claimed responsibility for the attack, and the V.N.A. in support of the Vulkarian Government. For one, the majority of conservatives are in support of continuing the air raids, while the rest of congress is universally against. To hear GLP Leader and Presidential candidate Cain Blackwater say it; “we have been involved in Vulkaria for over 35 years, and it’s about time for us to pull back a little bit.” However strong the objections, the lines are mainly drawn from two lines: history of military involvement and standing on the global community.
Zamastan has been involved both directly and indirectly in Vulkaria since the 1982 coup. That instance spurred terror attacks from the original M.L.F. in Zamastan and spawned the first full-blown invasion of Vulkaria. That led to an eight yearlong conflict with over 8,000 Zamastanian soldiers being killed. The 1999-2005 war killed over 23,000 Zamastanian soldiers and over 2 million Vulkarians were killed. The current air strikes are supported militarily by Cadair and Shuell directly, with Sanctaria and Laeral notably refusing to comment as of May 13th, and the strikes being immensely discouraged by Gladysynthia. However, Gladysynthia supports the rebels directly via ground forces, which has led to sanctions by Zamastan. Many liberals are tired of the military action, though they are sure to reassure that they understand the impact of the rebels if the military action halts and want to work towards more diplomatic measures. Conservatives will reinforce the stigma that diplomacy has failed in the past and will continue to fail. The events in Vulkaria will most certainly become a key issue in the coming Presidential election.
