The Secretary of State for Devolution and Governmental Affairs, also known as the Secretary for Governmental Affairs or Governmental Affairs Secretary, is the head of the Sanctarian Department of Devolution and Governmental Affairs, which is tasked with political reform, the administration of elections and other ballot initiatives, management of local government administration and funding, and acting as a liaison between the national government and local authorities.
The current Secretary for Governmental Affairs is Ben Jackson, who was appointed to the post on 01 February 2018. The department was officially created by legislation later that same day.
The Secretary for Governmental Affairs is a senior advisor to the Prime Minister on matters relating to government and political reform, local government and devolution, as well as other administrative and symbolic functions such as the administration and oversight of elections. Examples of areas that come under the purview of the Governmental Affairs Secretary include reviewing devolved powers, administration of local government funding, the development of policy regarding political reform, and assisting the Department of the Prime Minister in civil service oversight.
The Department of Devolution and Governmental Affairs was created on 01 February 2018. Its functions were transferred from other government departments and agencies, most notably the Department of Justice.
Duties of the Governmental Affairs Secretary include, but are not limited to:
- Administration of elections, referenda, and other public ballot initiatives in Sanctaria.
- Development and implementation of policy regarding government and political reform.
- Regular review of current local government operations and the devolution of powers.
- Responsibility for relations with local governments and local authorities.
